Website Basics

A website is more than just a place to post your ideas, pictures, and products. It is your portal that has the ability to communicate with virtually anyone in the world with an internet connection. This chapter helps you out in understanding important elements and aspects of websites, and what you can to do improve on the structure and design of your existing site.

If you can create a website, even from the most rudimentary and basic form, then you can upgrade that and make it an even better candidate for search engine optimization. Note that SEO only works best if the webmaster is well-aware of the needs of his website, and knows what he can do to improve on the layout, elements, and other features.

Basically, websites that are placed on the World Wide Web are created using the HTML code, or the Hypertext Markup Language. This makes it easier for internet browsers of any kind to read the website code, and display it in the form of graphics and text that the viewer can understand. Even websites created through software such as Macromedia Flash, Dreamweaver, or Microsoft Frontpage, are translated in to the HTML code, which serves as the universal language of the WWW.

Good Website Page Layout

What are the qualities of a website with a good page layout? The essential reminder is that less can actually mean more when it comes to web designing and web building. Don’t dream too big and don’t expect to make your site ultra stylish and chock full of stuff. Usually, when you try to open a free web account that has a small amount of web space, you are given web building tools by that web host, such as Yahoo and Geocities. If you are a beginner at web design, then this is a good way to go. The small web space helps you start out with less content and fewer graphics, so you can learn how to put in what is relevant.

Eventually, when you have figured out how websites are built, you can start designing them yourself. Luckily, there are tons of web design software that you can try, and the most popular being Microsoft FrontPage. Note that most of these programs require a purchase, but you can always check out the free trial version, or other sites that offer freeware on web designing.
